Stories From the Walk Home

I walk to reconnect with my inner home. These are some of the stories I’ve encountered along the way.

2024: 15 days walking 161 km along the Ayrshire Coastal Path, in Scotland, with Dad

2022: 32 days walking 643 km from Oslo to Trondheim, Norway, with Chin-Yu.

What I’m Doing

I was invited to a walking challenge by a colleague at Trondheim International School in April 2020, during our first lockdown. Since then, I’ve managed to maintain some of my sanity and strength by walking an average of 7.5km/day (10,000 steps).

While I still walk 7-8km daily now, I occasionally hear an inner voice calling me to walk a longer distance. I find peace and a sense of belonging and connection while walking.

2024: I’ve resigned my teaching position. I had a beautiful send off yesterday from students, parents and colleagues. I have no plans to return to teaching, but I’m not saying never. First, I’ll walk.

2022: I’m on a trail to recovery…recovery from working in schools. I am feeling a little lost, to be honest, like I can’t last any longer in my current role as a Teacher. That’s a scary feeling at 49. I have been teaching K-12 in the classroom since 2006 (two of those years were at sea and involved 24/7 for the school year – see kimafloat.wordpress.com for some of the stories). I think I was burnt-out prior to the arrival of our new global community member, SARS-CoV-2. Now, I am burnt-out with a cherry on top. My nervous system is a wreck. (Later note: the walk helped. Walking often helps).

“Fantastic conversations”

I’ve walked a few times with my walking partner to check our compatibility and we always have fantastic meaningful conversations. I am looking forward to learning more from her and her worldview, and from the land along the way.

Day 14 (last walking day): Largs to Skelmorlie

Day’s total kms: 15.5km The day was absolutely gorgeous! Sunny with a breeze when we needed one. Dad surprised me this morning with the suggestion that we do the high path, which is 14.5km rather than 11km. Great idea! The view we had was stunning! We started from the apartment at 9am and got to…

Day 13: Fairlie to Largs

Day’s total kms: 10km Beautiful day with lots of sun. About 16C with gentle breeze. The bus only runs every two hours on Sunday and not until 10am, so we caught the first bus to Fairlie and started walking at about 10:30. We missed a sign around these houses in Fairlie somewhere, and found ourselves…

Day 12: Seamill Hydro to Fairlie

Day’s total km: 13.5km Aside from one 5 min sprinkle at about 11am today, the day was sunny and warm. The sea breeze was a bit chilly before noon, but oh that sun! We left the flat at 9:15 for the bus and started walking at 9:50am. The morning walk was beautiful. The walk from…
